Getting Back in the Swing of Things + PAX Unplugged Day 0

Hello! It’s been… well longer than I would have wanted. My summer job took a huge amount of my time and energy, and while I don’t regret taking it and had fun, I’ve definitely fallen out of my habits. On top of that, over the past few weeks or so I’ve been in the process of moving (not far, just to the other side of town), so everything has been in shambles. Luckily, the internet is on, my computer is set up, and it’s time to get back to work. I’ve got a short blog post for you today, but longer ones are in the not-so-far-off future.

First and foremost, I’m planning to get back to work on Maintenance Crew very soon. I believe I mentioned in a previous blog that I wanted to take a break from it to work on smaller projects to establish a presence and learn other engines so that when my big project is done, I’ve already got some following. I’m still intending to do some work on some other smaller projects in other engines, but I no longer want to delay working on Maintenance Crew for them. Maintenance Crew is what I really enjoy working on and really want to make, so that’s what I’m going to put most of my effort into, with smaller projects in between when I get stuck or bored. I do think ultimately the time away from the project has been a good thing though. I’ve had some thoughts about the overall game design that I probably wouldn’t have had if I kept my head down working on it, and I’ll be detailing those in a future blog post. At the time of writing this, I haven’t yet gotten back to work on that, but I will be very soon (as soon as I’m not living in boxes anymore).

Now, for the other part of this blog post — I’m going to PAX Unplugged in Philadelphia!

I really enjoyed going to PAX East last year in Boston so over the summer when PAX Unplugged badges went on sale, I picked one up immediately. I’m very excited for the trip (even though I have to wake up at 3:30 tomorrow morning to get on the road) and this time around, I won’t be alone! I’ll be meeting up with several community members from Hyjules’ twitch community, some I’ve met before and some I only know online, so it’s gonna be a good time. Like last time, I’m gonna blog my activities at the end of each day here, so that I can get back in the swing of writing blog posts for when I get back to Maintenance Crew, so look forward to that!

All in all, I’m excited to be getting back to it and hopefully I’ll be streaming my progress on Maintenance Crew again, either as coworking or as game development over on twitch at https://twitch.tv/nylanomel, so stay tuned for that. See you tomorrow for Pax Unplugged Day 1!
